1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Convertible

This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 is one of 402 convertibles produced for the model year and was completed on January 19, 1968. It was first delivered to Tasca Ford of East Providence, Rhode Island, and is said to have spent the previous 30 years in Norway, where it was refurbished. It was imported back to the US and acquired by the seller in February 2024. The car is refinished in gold over a reupholstered black vinyl interior and is powered by a 427ci side-oiler V8 said to be stroked to 505ci. Equipment includes a three-speed automatic transmission, a Holley carburetor, Magnaflow exhaust, the Interior Décor Group, the Visibility Group, the Extra Cooling Package, a power-operated white soft top, a roll hoop, functional hood scoops, a rear spoiler, front disc brakes, power steering, 10-spoke 15″ aluminum wheels, and a Pioneer stereo. This GT500 is now offered with a Deluxe Marti Report, a build sheet, a boot cover, a Shelby registry book, the owner’s manual, service records, and a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.

The GT500 model was equipped with a ducktail rear spoiler, fender extensions, air scoops on the sail and quarter panels, and a fiberglass ventilated hood with a ram-air scoop. This example was factory-finished in Sunlit Gold with GT500 side stripes, and it was refinished under previous ownership. Additional exterior equipment includes a replacement power-operated white soft top, inboard grille-mounted driving lamps, and dual exhaust outlets.

Aluminum 10-spoke 15″ wheels wear Shelby Cobra center caps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 245/60. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. The car is equipped with power steering, and stopping is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin was refurbished under previous ownership and features front bucket seats reupholstered in black vinyl that extend to the door panels. Interior appointments include a Pioneer stereo, front seat shoulder harnesses, rear seat lap belts, and a heater. A roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars. The Visibility Group included under-dash courtesy lights and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment.

The woodgrain tilt-away steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 14k miles, though the total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 427ci side-oiler V8 was installed under previous ownership and is believed to have been stroked to 505ci, and it was built with CP-Carillo forged pistons and a Crane Cams hydraulic roller camshaft and aluminum rocker arms. Dynamometer results indicate peak power output of 500 horsepower and 573 lb-ft of torque. Additional equipment includes a Holley carburetor, Holman-Moody Branded valve covers, exhaust headers, MSD ignition, a Mallory distributor, and a Cobra-branded oil pan.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a C6 three-speed automatic transmission. The transmission and 9″ rear end are said to have been rebuilt. A stainless steel 3″ dual exhaust system with Magnaflow mufflers is fitted.
