1961 MG MGA 1600 Roadster

This 1961 MGA 1600 Mk I roadster is powered by a 1.6-liter inline-four linked to a four-speed manual transmission and is finished in white over beige leather. Equipment includes a Weber carburetor, a Pierce intake manifold, woodgrain dashboard trim, lap belts, dual side mirrors, a luggage rack, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, and a tonneau cover. The car was purchased by the current owner in 2017, and subsequent refurbishment work has involved reupholstering the interior, repairing wiring, overhauling the brakes and the suspension, refurbishing the wheels, and replacing the tires. This MGA roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner, with service records from current ownership, an owner’s manual, and a Kansas title.

The car was repainted in white under prior ownership, and exterior equipment includes a bright body-contour grille, dual side mirrors, a rear luggage rack, a cockpit tonneau cover, and bright front and rear bumpers with bumperettes. Some of the exterior badges were replaced in 2017. The car is not equipped with a convertible top or frame. Chips, cracks, and other exterior blemishes are pointed out in the photo gallery below, and rust is noted on the rocker panels, the lower fenders, and the front and rear valances. The brightwork is pitted, and the passenger-side taillight lens is cracked. The quarter panels have received bodywork under previous ownership, and the fit and shape around the wheel openings is imperfect. The passenger-side quarter panel displays a visible sheetmetal screw running through the bottom flange. Seam sealer where the driver-side quarter panel meets the rocker panel has failed, revealing a gap. The photos in the gallery were taken in December 2023.

The silver-painted 15″ knock-off wire wheels were stripped and powdercoated in December 2023 before being wrapped in replacement 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is provided by front discs and rear drums; the rear brakes were overhauled in December 2023 by media-blasting and turning the drums and also replacing the shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, and hardware. The front suspension was refurbished in December 2023 with work that involved media-blasting and painting black the control arms, springs, and other suspension pieces and also replacing the trunnion and control-arm bushings, swivel links, distance tubes, and oil seals.

The interior and its bucket seats were reupholstered in beige leather in 2017, at which time the black carpeting and the tonneau cover were replaced. Interior appointments include a color-coordinated center armrest and door panels as well as woodgrain dashboard trim, lap belts, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, a heater, and door-panel map pockets. The under-dash wiring was repaired in 2018, and the door latches and the trunk seal were replaced. The door weatherstripping is aged, the leather-wrapped panels behind the seats fit poorly, and paint issues in the trunk and a missing hinge bolt are pictured in the gallery.

The banjo-style steering wheel is mounted to an adjustable column and fronts Jaeger instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 2,600 miles, approximately 1,100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 16GA 1.6-liter inline-four is augmented by a Weber 32/36 DGAV carburetor and a Pierce intake manifold. The thermostat and the fuel tank were replaced in 2018. In late 2023, the fuel tank was drained and cleaned, an electric fuel pump was installed, the fuel filter and the battery were replaced, and the engine oil and filter were changed. A spin-on oil-filter adapter has been fitted. Oil weeps from the valve-cover gasket, the lower radiator hose exhibits age, and rust is noted on underhood components.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The pinion seal and transmission seal were replaced in 2018, and in late 2023 the differential was cleaned and stripped, the rear hubs were removed, and the rear-axle seals and bearings were replaced. The car has been undercoated, and there is an oil leak from the left side of the gearbox. The findings of a December 2023 pre-purchase inspection provided in the gallery indicate the presence of previous repair work and corrosion around the left-front leaf-spring mounting area and the nearby frame horn. Additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery.
