Kellison GT-40K

This GT40-style replica was assembled by the prior owner using a modified 1962 Volkswagen chassis, a Kellison GT-40K fiberglass body kit, a 2,054cc air-cooled flat-four with an aluminum block, and a four-speed manual transaxle. The car is finished in blue over black vinyl upholstery, and features include power-assisted disc brakes, 17″ American Racing alloy wheels, and an adjustable suspension as well as Weber carburetors, a roll cage, and AutoMeter Pro-Comp instrumentation. Acquired by the selling dealer in 2024, this Kellison GT-40K kit car is now offered with build records and a clean California title that lists the car as a 1962 Volkswagen.

Kellison Engineering was founded by in 1958 by Jim Kellison, and the company produced a variety of complete vehicles and kit cars until 1970. The fiberglass body of this GT-40K is finished in blue with a red stripe and number 20 roundels on the nose panel and engine cover. Features include side air intakes, doors that extend into the roof, a Kamm-tail, and a plexiglass backlight and headlight covers. No side windows are fitted, and cracks are visible in the finish above the upper-left corner of the windshield.

American Racing 17″ alloy wheels are mounted with Federal RS tires sized 215/40 up front and 235/40 out back. Stopping power is from disc brakes at all four corners, and the car rides on an adjustable suspension system with front and rear anti-sway bars.

The two-person cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl along with a color-coordinated dash surround and black carpets. Features include a short-throw floor shifter, a master power cutoff switch, and an overhead console with switches for controlling the fuel pump, ignition, and starter.

The three-spoke MOMO steering wheel sits ahead of AutoMeter Pro-Comp instrumentation including a tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The odometer shows 20 miles, a handful of which were added by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2,054cc air-cooled flat-four was built by Bennett’s Auto Repair of Clovis, California, and has an aluminum block, a Drake oil cooler with an electric fan, dual Weber carburetors, velocity stacks, and open-element air cleaners.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle that is said to have been overhauled during the assembly process.

The chassis number 4667138 corresponds with a 1962 Volkswagen, which is the year and make noted on the California title.
