1938 LaSalle Series 38-50 Sedan

This 1938 LaSalle Series 38-50 sedan underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 1992 before the car was purchased by the seller on BaT in June 2023. It was later featured in a BaT Success Story, and work since the last auction has included rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the tires, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and fluids. The car is finished in black over gray cloth upholstery, and power comes from a 322ci monobloc V8 paired with a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. Features include an electric fuel pump, chrome bumpers, a hood ornament, rear-hinged rear doors, “Ventiplane” windows, and a heater. This LaSalle is now offered with refurbishment and recent service records, a copy of its factory delivery invoice, spare parts, and a Florida title in the seller’s name.

The body was repainted in its current black during the refurbishment, and it features body-color headlight buckets, chrome bumpers, an egg-crate grille, a hood ornament, running boards, rear-hinged rear doors, “Ventiplane” front and rear windows, a split rear window, and dual taillights. The thermostatic hood vent controls have been disconnected, and paint imperfections, bubbles, and corrosion on the bumpers can be viewed in the gallery. New lock buttons were installed at each door since the last BaT auction.

The black-painted steel wheels wear chrome LaSalle-branded hubcaps and were mounted with 7.00–16 Coker Firestone whitewall bias-ply tires under current ownership. A spare wheel is mounted beneath the trunk floor. The Series 50 rode on a 124″ wheelbase and features a coil-sprung independent front suspension along with a live rear axle and leaf springs. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a gray-painted steel dashboard housing a 110-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and battery charge. The five-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 322ci monobloc V8 was factory rated at 125 horsepower and features a carburetor that was rebuilt by Larry Isgro Carburetors in September 2023. Revised grounding has reportedly been added to the generator. Work performed since the 2023 auction is said to include installing an electric fuel pump, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure gauge, an Optima six-volt red-top battery, and a Wix air cleaner, as well as replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and the points and condenser. The oil and coolant were also replaced. A Wix replacement element air cleaner has been installed in lieu of the prior oil bath unit. The seller notes an oil leak when the car is not driven regularly.
